World Ocean Day

10th June 2026
First proposed over 30 years ago at the Rio Earth summit, World Ocean Day is celebrated on the 8th June.

Around the British Isles The seas form a restless, life‑rich boundary where the North Sea, English Channel, Celtic Sea, and Irish Sea meet shifting skies and powerful tides. These waters shape the nation’s climate, culture, and economy, supporting fisheries, shipping routes, and thriving coastal communities. Cold currents mix with warmer flows, creating habitats for seals, dolphins, seabirds, and vast kelp forests. From rugged Atlantic swells to the calmer southern shores, the UK’s seas hold both beauty and vulnerability, reminding us how vital marine protection is for the future.

From the raw power of the Atlantic as it barrels into the west coast of Ireland, to secluded Cornish coves, the uniqueness of the Saltburn funicular railway and the stillness of the harbour in Tobermory the coastline of the British Isles gives a different experience every visit.
